I
believe everyone's journey has many paths. Although I have
followed several paths, my First Path was, and is, MUSIC. I
chose the title of this, my first CD, because it is my inner
desire. From childhood to present, music has always drawn me
back to my First Path and the songs I chose for this CD reflect
my journey. Lover Come Back to Me is
a last minute addition. This song has been recorded many times
by many artists. I have always connected to this song and felt
compelled to record it. I fell in love with Fascinating
Rhythm while living and working in Prague, though interestingly,
I never performed it in the Czech Republic. I chose the Rodgers & Hart
classic ballad My Funny Valentine in
part because of Hans Brehmer, the pianist on this collection.
He connects his music to this song in a way that allows a silence
and inspires my interpretation of this song. I first noticed Day
In Day Out on Frank Sinatra's "Live In Paris" recording
some time ago and I've been performing it every since. Stardust is
inspired and dedicated to my sweet Katherine. Cole Porter is
one of my favorite composers. I talked about this in an interview
in Jazz Steps a few years ago. I love the groove on Oh
Lady Be Good. It just makes me sing so it was a forgone
conclusion that I included it in this collection. I discover A
Day In the Life Of A Fool on a Rosemary Clooney album.
Her simple approach to this song stole my heart. I had to sing
it. Answer Me is one of the more
intricate songs on this CD. I kept being drawn to this haunting
melody, even though I had reservations about including this
odd tune in this collection. The arrangement came from my friend
and mentor, Harry Martin. In discussing the instrumentation,
Harry and I went through a number of considerations before
settling on the Oboe, and how fortunate that Ove Hanson from
the Seattle Symphony Orchestra agreed to play on this recording.
A while back I found myself in Brazil sitting in the cafe where The
Girl From Ipanema was written. I felt the desire to
record the song, yet I had reservations because it had been
recorded so many times and I didn't know what I could do with
the song to make it mine. My guitar player, Jeff Olson, came
up with the approach you hear in my rendition, so here you
have it. Michele Legrand is another legend and I love singing What
Are You Doing the Rest Of Your Life. Paul Kempson was
my pianist when I was living and working Prague and when he
introduced me to Black Coffee it
was like slipping into a custom made shoe. The lyrics are outdated
and can be offensive, yet I feel the song should be sung in
its original form. No offense intended ladies! That
Lucky Old Sun is dedicated to my Mother, Louise Pinckney.
Mom played a wide variety of music in our home and for some
unknown reason Ray Charles singing this song was a favorite
of mine. I sing this song with Louise's gospel roots and Ray's
soulful influence. To top this all off, I chose Don't
Put No Headstone on My Grave, a country song written
by Charlie Rich. Not familiar with the country version, I first
heard this song sung as a ballad on some long-forgotten movie
soundtrack. My instant love of this song led me down my first
path to the blues.
Special thanks to Harry & Uta Martin for opening your home, giving me many hours of your time, and being just "a phone call away" through this CD and the times in between. Bert Gulhaugen, you are awesome. Alan Lawrence,at Jazzloft.com, you are a man of many talents. Thanks for the help with the cover and the Web Page. Lastly, thank you Kelly Cox for making me look good on the cover photos. Clipper
